Data analysis predicts Taylor Swift as Artist of the Year at 2026 MTV VMAs

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards will be held on Sept. 27 in Los Angeles. While fans can still cast up to ten votes per category each day, a new data‑driven analysis from music‑analytics platform Viberate offers a glimpse of how the awards might look if streaming, video and radio performance alone decided the winners.

Methodology behind the rankings

Viberate examined the nominees for Artist of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist. Each category received a separate 0‑to‑100 score based on a blend of metrics:

  • Artist of the Year – 12‑month Spotify streams, YouTube views, radio airplay, current audience size and 30‑day audience growth.
  • Song of the Year – 12‑month Spotify streams, YouTube views, radio spins, recent monthly performance and current Spotify playlist exposure.
  • Best New Artist – Current‑footprint model using Spotify, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram audiences (60% of the score) plus Spotify playlist reach and active playlist presence (40%).

All metrics were log‑transformed and normalized across each nominee field. Data gaps were excluded to ensure a fair comparison.

Artist of the Year: Taylor Swift leads

Taylor Swift tops the Artist of the Year ranking with a score of 77.7, followed by Bruno Mars at 68.5 and Ariana Grande at 66.2. Swift’s advantage stems from her massive 12‑month performance: roughly 19.4 billion Spotify streams, 3.6 billion YouTube views and 6.4 million radio spins during the measurement period.

Grande showed stronger recent audience growth, adding about 6.1 million monthly listeners on Spotify and 1.8 million new TikTok followers in the latest 30‑day window. Mars fell between the two, pairing solid annual consumption with modest recent growth. The analysis concludes that Swift’s sustained consumption base makes her the front‑runner for Artist of the Year.

Song of the Year: “Golden” takes the lead

In the Song of the Year category, the track “Golden” – a collaboration by HUNTR/X: EJAE, Audrey Nuna and REI AMI – scores 84.5, edging out Olivia Dean’s “Man I Need” (79.9) and Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas” (79.6). “Golden” amassed about 1.46 billion Spotify streams, 1.57 billion YouTube views and 1.1 million radio spins over the 12‑month window.

“Man I Need” performed strongest in Spotify discovery, reaching nearly 200 million playlist listeners, while “Choosin’ Texas” led the recent‑momentum portion of the model. Nonetheless, “Golden” earned a higher overall score by delivering strong consumption across multiple channels.

Best New Artist: A tight race

The Best New Artist category produced the narrowest margin. CORTIS earned a score of 76.85, just 0.28 points ahead of Malcolm Todd’s 76.57, with Sienna Spiro in third place at 73.74.

CORTIS boasts the largest cross‑platform audience footprint: roughly 5.4 million Spotify followers, 6.7 million YouTube subscribers, 16.9 million TikTok followers and 15.7 million Instagram followers as of Aug. 30. Todd, however, led several Spotify metrics, including the highest monthly listener count at about 39.5 million and an average playlist reach of roughly 175.5 million during the final measurement window.

The model weights 60% of the score to current audience size and 40% to discovery, allowing CORTIS’s broader social presence to edge out Todd’s stronger Spotify performance.

What the data means for the VMAs

While Viberate’s analysis highlights likely front‑runners based on measurable consumption, the official MTV VMAs will still be decided by fan voting. The ceremony, broadcast on CBS and MTV and streamed on Paramount+, remains a celebration of popular opinion as much as of raw data.

Fans can continue to vote through Sept. 27, shaping the final outcomes for Artist of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist. Whether the data‑driven predictions align with the eventual winners will be an interesting post‑event comparison.
