Dallas water utility tackles surge in main breaks as summer heat persists

Dallas Water Utilities (DWU) confirmed Thursday that the city’s water system is under unprecedented strain from sustained high temperatures, increased demand and dry, expansive soil. Daily water consumption, which typically hovers just above 400 million gallons, stayed above the 600 million‑gallon mark throughout August and into the first week of September, according to a September 10 city update.

Why the system is under pressure

Officials explained that higher water use raises flow velocity in the pipes, while the hot, dry soil expands and creates additional stress on the underground network. Those factors together have contributed to a noticeable uptick in main‑line failures.

Repair activity to date

In the past three months, DWU crews have repaired 310 main‑line breaks, fixed 377 service‑line leaks and addressed 233 hydrant issues. To meet the summer surge, the utility activated an additional repair contract and has crews working around the clock.

Understanding DWU’s priority system

Every reported or detected leak receives a priority rating from 1 to 4 after a field assessment. The rating reflects potential threats to safety, property damage, water loss, traffic disruption, customer impact and the importance of the affected line or facility.

  • Priority 4 – Emergencies that pose immediate health or safety risks, major water loss, or critical facility impacts. Crews respond immediately and typically complete repairs within 24 hours.
  • Priority 3 – Planned repairs with significant effects, such as noticeable water loss or active surface flow. These are usually finished within about a week, after higher‑priority cases.
  • Priority 2 – Confirmed minor leaks that cause only a wet spot and no broader impact.
  • Priority 1 – Suspected or confirmed leaks in low‑impact locations, queued while crews address higher‑priority work.

How residents can help

DWU urges anyone who notices a water main break or leak to call 3‑1‑1 and select the water‑main leak/break option. Out‑of‑city callers may use 214‑670‑3111. Reports can also be submitted online or through the Dallas 311 mobile app for iOS and Android. Each report triggers a field assessment, ensuring the appropriate priority level is assigned promptly.

Looking ahead

DWU manages more than 5,000 miles of water mains ranging from 0.75 inches to 108 inches in diameter across roughly 700 square miles of service area. The utility says it will continue to monitor usage patterns and soil conditions, adjusting resources as needed to keep Dallas residents supplied with safe drinking water throughout the remainder of the heat season.
