Dallas officials announced that several downtown streets and the Victory Park DART station will be closed this week to accommodate the first-ever Republican Midterm Convention, scheduled for Sept. 9‑10 at the American Airlines Center.
Street and transit closures
Effective Sept. 7 through midnight on Sept. 11, Victory Avenue, North Houston Street, Nowitzki Way, Payne Street and North Field Street will be inaccessible to vehicle traffic. The DART Victory Park station will also be closed for the duration of the event, and rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft will be barred from entering the designated “secure zone” surrounding the arena.
Security measures
Temporary fencing has been installed around the venue, and Secret Service agents are conducting checkpoint inspections for both pedestrians and vehicles. The agency confirmed that checkpoints will remain in place for the entire convention period.
Dallas estimates the police security effort will cost about $1.8 million, reflecting the city’s commitment to keeping the event safe for attendees and residents alike.
Convention schedule
The two‑day convention will be divided into two programming blocks each evening. The first night (Sept. 9) will focus on tax cuts, affordable health‑care, border security, trade and domestic manufacturing, with Vice President J.D. Vance delivering the keynote address. President Donald Trump will keynote the second night (Sept. 10) and will appear on both evenings, which will also feature a tribute to conservative activist Charlie Kirk and discussions on policies that benefit families, such as no tax on tips, overtime pay and Social Security.
Residents and commuters are encouraged to plan alternate routes and use other transit options during the closure period.
