Washington, D.C. – At a rally on Freedom Plaza, D.C. Councilmember Robert White announced the launch of Defend DC, a new effort to mobilize District residents to campaign for Democratic allies in competitive congressional districts across the nation. White, who is running for the District’s non‑voting delegate seat, said the strategy aims to build a Democratic majority in the U.S. House, which he views as essential to defending the District from Republican attempts to curtail its autonomy.
Building a Defense Through Elections
White explained that Republicans are targeting D.C. for “purely political purposes,” either to appease the president or their base. By helping Democratic candidates win, he believes the District can secure a stronger voice in Congress and advance the long‑standing push for statehood.
During the August 24 rally, White also introduced the DC51 Leadership PAC, which would, if he wins in November, work to strengthen national partnerships, defend Home Rule, and continue the fight for D.C. statehood.
Upcoming Campaign Trips
Defend DC volunteers will travel to selected districts over the next 60 days, beginning with a Labor Day weekend visit to Virginia’s 5th Congressional District, where former Rep. Tom Periello is challenging incumbent Rep. John McGuire. The effort will later expand to other states, with plans for New Jersey and Pennsylvania still pending.
National Legislative Context
The initiative comes as congressional Republicans have introduced more than 130 bills, amendments, and riders aimed at limiting District autonomy. Among the proposals are a House bill that would require congressional approval for changes to the District’s tax code and a Senate measure that could restore the death penalty in D.C.
Allies Beyond the Capital
White highlighted support from Tennessee Rep. Justin J. Pearson, a Democratic candidate for the state’s 9th Congressional District, who has spoken out for D.C. representation and called the District a “guiding light” for those seeking to reclaim authority from a system he says is designed against them.
Pearson’s campaign, backed by local D.C. organizers, plans a phone‑banking event in the District on September 2 to rally additional support for candidates who endorse D.C. statehood.
Looking Ahead
White emphasized that the current political climate offers a unique window for statehood, noting that “we have never had a window for statehood like the one we have now.” He pledged to continue building coalitions and engaging voters as the November 3 general election approaches.
