A design writer and collector, Dung Ngo, has amassed over 10,000 pieces of cutlery, sparking an obsession with the art of cutlery design. His new book, ‘Knife Fork Spoon: Modernist Cutlery 1900–2025,’ and accompanying exhibition at the Denver Art Museum, feature iconic flatware designs from the past 125 years.

Ngo’s research highlights the structural problems with modern cutlery production, which has barely changed in 150 years. He also notes the disappearance of traditional craftsmanship in cutlery making. To address these issues, Ngo commissioned 11 international artists to reimagine cutlery design using 3D printing technology.
The resulting designs are showcased in the exhibition Knife, Fork, Spoon 3.0, which features unique and culturally inspired cutlery sets. Ngo believes that 3D printing technology will revolutionize cutlery design, allowing for personalized and accessible designs for people with limited hand dexterity.
