Curt Gowdy State Park Seeks Public Input for Future Improvements

Curt Gowdy State Park, a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts in Wyoming, is seeking public input to guide its future development. Located between Laramie and Cheyenne, the park has seen a significant increase in visitors since 2020, with annual visitation now around 600,000. This surge has prompted Wyoming State Parks to initiate a master plan process to address the park’s evolving needs.

Community Engagement and Future Planning

Park Superintendent Adam McKay emphasized the importance of community feedback in shaping the park’s future. “What we’re really looking for is: What does the public want at this point?” McKay stated. While recent efforts have focused on expanding the park’s trail network, there is a recognition that visitors may have other priorities, such as improved campsites, water hookups, or additional recreational facilities.

The master plan, expected to be completed by August 2027, will guide the park’s management for the next 10 to 15 years. The process begins with an online survey and several public input opportunities. This approach aims to identify gaps and understand what visitors value most about the park, which currently offers over 50 miles of trails and more than 180 reservable lodging sites.

Balancing Popularity with Preservation

While the park’s growing popularity, particularly among mountain bikers, is welcomed, it also presents challenges such as limited parking. Curt Gowdy’s transformation into a mountain biking hotspot began in the early 2000s, with the construction of over 40 miles of trails in collaboration with the International Mountain Bike Association. This has attracted cyclists from across the country, further boosting the park’s profile.

However, the park remains a multi-use area, catering to campers, hikers, and equestrians. The current master plan, dating back to the late 1980s, no longer reflects the park’s diverse offerings and increased visitor numbers. The new plan aims to address these changes while preserving the park’s natural beauty and recreational appeal.

Wyoming State Parks encourages residents and visitors to participate in the planning process by completing the online survey available through July 12. Community pop-up events will also provide opportunities for in-person feedback. This inclusive approach seeks to build a shared vision for Curt Gowdy State Park, ensuring it continues to serve as a cherished outdoor destination for years to come.
