When heavy smoke poured from a wooden house on Oct. 3 in the town of Culpeper, Virginia, residents in the building’s separate apartments gathered outside, fearing a neighbor was still inside.
Officer Ashley Sain answered the call without hesitation. She entered the burning structure without protective gear, checking each door for signs of life. Shortly after, Officer Neal Coffey joined her, using a pocket‑size tool to unlock a second‑floor door that was sealed from the inside.
Rescue effort inside the blaze
Inside the smoke‑filled hallway, the two officers shouted, “Police department, if you’re in here!” while the alarms blared. The fire‑filled room offered little visibility, but Coffey crawled on his hands and knees, flashlight in hand, searching for anyone who might be trapped.
“I can’t see!” Coffey shouted, his voice growing desperate as the smoke thickened. He felt his way forward, eventually locating a man lying unresponsive on a bed. “Hey brother, come on!” Coffey urged, pulling the man’s arm and urging him to move.
With the help of Sgt. David Cole and Officer Michael Beel, who arrived on the second floor, the four officers lifted the unconscious resident onto the floor and dragged him into the hallway. A firefighter in full protective gear then emerged, and the team carried the man out of the burning building.
Aftermath and recognition
The rescued resident was taken to a local hospital and later transferred to a regional burn center. The cause of the fire and the victim’s identity remain under investigation.
Three of the officers—Sain, Coffey, and Cole—received treatment for smoke inhalation and other injuries but were released that evening.
On Oct. 14, Capt. Kevin Tooley, a supervisor with the Culpeper Police Department, presented valor awards to the four officers. “They went above and beyond the normal call for a police department,” Tooley said. “We normally don’t go into burning buildings. That’s typically the fire department’s job, but we couldn’t say no when a life was at stake.”
The courageous actions of these officers underscore the dedication of local law‑enforcement officers who put community safety first, even when the situation falls outside their usual duties.
