The country’s grid operator, UNE, has reconnected central Cuba to the grid, but the eastern and western extremes of the island remain offline. About one-third of the capital Havana has seen power restored, though large areas are still without electricity.
The latest grid collapse comes as the United States has increased pressure on Cuba, cutting off the island’s fuel supply and applying severe sanctions. Cuba and the United Nations have called these measures illegal and a violation of the human rights of the island’s residents.
