Connecticut state parks are now offering kayak, canoe, and paddleboard rentals for visitors. The rentals are available for $15 to $35 an hour, depending on the state park.
Exploring Connecticut’s Waterways
According to Jeff Shaw of the Connecticut Office of Industry and Experiences, having the equipment and instruction at the park removes significant barriers for people who are paddling. The hope is that people will pick up a new hobby and then stick around, exploring the local area and supporting the community.
Rachel Lenda of the Connecticut Office of Tourism noted that when people try a new activity, they often explore a town they’ve never visited before, tell their friends, and then come back again. This, she said, is tourism.
In addition to the rentals, the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has implemented a new law requiring ‘If Found’ tags on kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards. The law is in effect, and those without a tag could face a $120 fine.
