Connecticut’s 1st Congressional District is set to have a new representative, and the candidates are sharing their plans for affordable housing reform. Former Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin, a Democrat, and Dr. Amy Chai, a Republican, are running for the seat.

Affordable Housing Plans

Bronin believes the federal government can play a larger role in affordable housing development. He wants to reform and update federal housing finance tools, such as the Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC). Bronin also mentioned that as Hartford’s mayor, he was able to revitalize areas of the city and convert them into new housing opportunities.

Chai, on the other hand, has drafted federal legislation to expand limits on private equity firms purchasing single-family homes. She also plans to introduce a pilot program in Hartford to construct affordable home ownership opportunities on underutilized properties.
