Cruise passengers are experiencing a surge in daily gratuities and service charges. Several major cruise lines, including Holland America Line and MSC Cruises, have recently increased their gratuity or service charges. As of June 1, Holland America Line guests will pay daily “crew appreciation” charges of $18 per day for non-suite staterooms and $20 per day for suites.
Gratuity Increases Across the Industry
MSC Cruises also updated its daily service charge, raising the rate by $1 per person per night for standard staterooms on Caribbean and Alaska sailings. Carnival Cruise Line raised its gratuities earlier this spring, bringing the daily rate to $17 for standard staterooms and $19 for suites. The adult price for the Bottomless Bubbles package also increased to $11.99 per day from $9.50 per day.
Passengers have expressed frustration with the rising costs, with some feeling that the gratuity charges are becoming excessive. On social media platforms like Reddit and Facebook, travelers have complained about the extra fees, with some arguing that companies should be more transparent about the full cost of a trip.
The debate surrounding gratuity charges has sparked a wider discussion about the fairness of automatic tipping in the service industry. As one Reddit user noted, “I honestly feel the gratuity thing is going out of control.” Another user responded, “Gratuity everywhere is out of control. At self-checkouts, the machine asks for a tip. For who, exactly? The only correct answer is to tap ‘0%.'”
