Crowley Clarifies Stance: No Support for Illegal Immigrants Who Commit Violent Crimes

Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, the Democratic candidate for Wisconsin governor, has been asked to clarify his position on illegal immigrants who commit violent crimes. While Republican gubernatorial contender U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany alleged that Crowley “said he will be … an accomplice for illegal aliens that commit violent crimes,” Crowley’s own remarks tell a different story.

What Crowley Actually Said

During a recent interview, Crowley was asked how he would make Wisconsin “more immigrant friendly.” He explained that he opposes local police assisting federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) because such cooperation can discourage illegal immigrants from reporting crimes. He then added, “And when it comes down to the immigrants, I’m not an ally, I’m an accomplice.” The comment was meant to emphasize his belief that community safety is best served when law‑enforcement focuses on protecting all residents, not on serving as a tool for immigration enforcement.

Importantly, Crowley also stated that he supports deportation for individuals convicted of criminal offenses. He has repeatedly emphasized that he would not change Milwaukee County Sheriff’s policy of not assisting immigration officials in the jail, a stance he says protects public safety by encouraging cooperation with local police.

Republican Criticism and Our Assessment

Tom Tiffany seized on Crowley’s remarks, claiming the candidate would act as an “accomplice” for illegal immigrants who commit violent crimes. This characterization misrepresents Crowley’s position. The candidate has not advocated for leniency toward illegal immigrants who engage in violent conduct; rather, he has called for deportation of those convicted of crimes.

We note that Tiffany’s statement comes from a partisan opponent seeking to paint Crowley as soft on crime. While political debate is expected in a gubernatorial race, it is essential for voters to see the actual words spoken by the candidate. Crowley’s record shows a consistent focus on public‑safety‑first policies, including criticism of ICE arrests at the county courthouse and lobbying for state funding of immigrant legal services that help families navigate the system lawfully.

Policy Context for Wisconsin Voters

Wisconsin’s immigration debate has become a flashpoint in the 2026 governor’s race. The state’s Republican leadership has pushed for stricter enforcement, while many local officials, including Crowley, argue that community‑based policing and clear pathways for lawful immigration are more effective at keeping neighborhoods safe.

For voters, the key takeaway is that Crowley does not endorse illegal immigrants who commit violent offenses. He supports deportation for criminal convictions and opposes policies that would force local police to act as immigration agents, a stance he says protects both public safety and the rights of law‑abiding residents.

Where the Candidates Stand

  • David Crowley (Democrat): Opposes local police assistance to ICE; supports deportation for illegal immigrants convicted of crimes; emphasizes community safety and legal assistance for immigrant families.
  • Tom Tiffany (Republican): Accuses Crowley of being an “accomplice” for illegal immigrants who commit violent crimes; advocates for stronger immigration enforcement at the state level.

Wisconsin voters should weigh these positions against their own values of safety, family, and liberty. The upcoming November 3 election will determine which approach guides the state’s future.
