Crete receives $1.15 million federal grant to improve rail crossings

The City of Crete, Nebraska, will soon see a boost to its rail‑safety infrastructure after the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) confirmed the town’s receipt of a $1.15 million grant from the Federal‑State Partnership (FSP) Project Planning program. The funding, sourced from the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Railroad Administration, is earmarked for a comprehensive review of Crete’s eight existing at‑grade rail crossings.

Purpose of the grant

NDOT explained that the grant will support a detailed evaluation to determine whether each crossing should be upgraded, improved, or permanently closed. The goal is to enhance safety for motorists, pedestrians, and train operations while aligning Crete with national standards for rail‑crossing protection.

Broader federal investment

Crete’s project is one of 41 selected across the United States as part of a $5.3 billion federal investment aimed at modernizing rail infrastructure. The larger program seeks to reduce accidents, improve traffic flow, and protect communities situated near active rail lines.

Local impact

City officials anticipate that the evaluation process will involve input from local residents, businesses, and emergency responders. Upgraded crossings could mean better signage, improved lighting, and, where feasible, the installation of advanced warning systems. In cases where a crossing is deemed unsafe or redundant, permanent closure may be considered to eliminate risk altogether.

Mayor Jeff Smith praised the grant, noting that “enhancing rail safety is essential for protecting our families and supporting the economic vitality of Crete.” He added that the city looks forward to collaborating with NDOT and the Federal Railroad Administration to ensure the project meets community needs.

Next steps

NDOT will begin the evaluation phase later this year, with a timeline that includes site inspections, data collection, and public outreach. Once the analysis is complete, the department will present recommendations for each crossing, which the city will review before any construction or closure decisions are made.

Residents who have concerns or suggestions about specific crossings are encouraged to contact the Crete City Hall planning department. Public meetings are expected to be scheduled as part of the evaluation process, providing a forum for community input.

Funding context

The Federal‑State Partnership grant reflects a collaborative approach between federal and state agencies to address critical infrastructure needs. By leveraging federal dollars, localities like Crete can undertake projects that might otherwise be financially out of reach.

Overall, the $1.15 million award positions Crete to make meaningful improvements to rail safety, protect its citizens, and align with a nationwide effort to modernize the nation’s rail network.
