Parents at Fairview German Language School in Cincinnati are calling on Cincinnati Public School leaders to take action over concerns about racial disparities when it comes to disciplining students. At a school board meeting, dozens of concerned parents spoke up about the issue, now demanding an internal investigation into the conduct and leadership at Fairview.
Discipline Disparities
A recent data release by Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) revealed that African Americans, as well as boys, are being disciplined at a higher rate than other students. Fairview mom Chelsea O’Neal shared her personal experience, where her second-grade son was given a one-day out-of-school suspension for allegedly inserting himself into a fight, which was later found to be an incident of students playing soccer.
O’Neal’s story prompted her to look into the school’s code of conduct policies, where she found that the suspension was not in line with the school’s restorative programs for students in pre-K through second grade. She, along with other parents, is now calling for leadership to take accountability and address these concerns.
The school’s leadership is working with the parents to resolve the concerns, and a response from the CPS superintendent is expected by the end of the month.
