Court hearing for teen charged in JCPS bus stop shooting sparks hallway clash

Louisville, Ky. – On Monday, the Jefferson County Circuit Court held the initial hearing for 18‑year‑old Akira Thompson, who faces adult charges in the fatal shooting of 16‑year‑old Dannady Greene at a JC‑P‑S bus stop. Thompson, dressed in a yellow jumpsuit and shackles, entered the courtroom with a public defender and pleaded not guilty.

Judge’s decision and pending charges

Judge Susan Schultz Gibson ordered that Thompson remain on bond and confirmed the appointment of a public defender. Both Thompson and her alleged co‑defendant, 17‑year‑old Tayon Hassell, were indicted by a grand jury last week and will be tried as adults, despite being juveniles at the time of the killing. Hassell was not present at the hearing.

The indictment lists three counts for each teen: complicity to commit murder, tampering with physical evidence, and possession of a handgun by a minor. A joint bond hearing for both defendants is scheduled for January.

Family grief erupts into confrontation

While the courtroom session lasted only a few minutes, emotions ran high in the hallway afterward. Members of the Greene family, along with other relatives, gathered in the courtroom and, as the hearing concluded, a fight broke out among grieving relatives. One family member, visibly upset, said, “This is a deceased baby. My niece is dead because of somebody’s negligence.”

Multiple Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies intervened, separating the parties and restoring order. The WLKY news crew, which had been covering the hearing, was briefly detained near the courthouse entrance while officers worked to contain the disturbance, but the crew was later released.

Community response and the broader issue of youth violence

The tragic loss of Dannady Greene has reignited community concerns about gun violence involving minors. Local leaders and faith‑based groups have called for stronger parental involvement and support for at‑risk youth, emphasizing the need for families to protect their children and for the justice system to hold offenders accountable.

“Our children deserve safe streets and safe schools,” said a spokesperson for a local church that has been providing counseling to the Greene family. “We must stand together to uphold the rule of law and protect the innocent.”

Next steps in the legal process

Thompson’s not‑guilty plea does not preclude the court from imposing a substantial bond, and the upcoming January hearing will determine whether she remains in custody pending trial. Hassell’s arraignment is set for next week, where he will also enter a plea.

The case underscores the seriousness with which Jefferson County prosecutors are treating juvenile homicide, opting to try the teens as adults to reflect the gravity of the crime and to send a clear message that violent wrongdoing will not be tolerated.

Public safety and the rule of law

Law‑enforcement officials reaffirmed their commitment to investigating the shooting thoroughly and to pursuing all leads. Sheriff’s deputies continue to patrol the area around the bus stop to reassure residents and deter further incidents.

As the community mourns the loss of a promising young life, local authorities, faith leaders, and families alike are calling for prayer, support, and decisive action to ensure that justice is served and that similar tragedies are prevented in the future.
