U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton addressed the Arkansas Municipal Police Association’s annual conference in Hot Springs, Arkansas, where he discussed the United States’ relationship with Iran and the need for sustained military action. Cotton stated that the U.S. should resume strikes against Iran to further weaken its armed forces and keep the Strait of Hormuz open.
Cotton’s Plan for Iran
Cotton credited President Donald Trump with leaving Iran weaker than at any point since the country’s 1979 revolution. He cited the 2020 U.S. airstrike that killed Iranian Gen. Qasem Soleimani and more recent strikes on the country’s military. Cotton expressed his preference for the United States to have continued its military campaign earlier this year, targeting Iran’s military and reopening the strait.
Cotton emphasized the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, as it is a vital route for global oil shipments. He noted that the United States has the military capability to keep the waterway open despite its proximity to Iran. Cotton also suggested that the military action should be paired with a continued blockade, which he said had been costing Iran about $500 million a day.
