Cottage Grove motorcyclist killed in crash near Waldo Lake, Lane County officials say

Lane County officials confirmed that Ryan Lee Foster, a 42‑year‑old resident of Cottage Grove, died Sunday, Oct. 4, after his motorcycle crashed near Waldo Lake. The accident occurred at the intersection of Waldo Lake Road and the Shadow Bay access road, roughly 55 miles southeast of Eugene.

Emergency response

Dispatchers received the first call at approximately 4:40 p.m. Bystanders who arrived at the scene attempted CPR on the unconscious rider while awaiting help. Sheriff’s Office personnel arrived shortly thereafter and coordinated with firefighter medics, who reached the site around 5:15 p.m. Despite their efforts, Foster was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation underway

The Lane County Sheriff’s Office has opened an investigation into the crash. Officers have not released details about the cause, weather conditions, or any potential involvement of other vehicles. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have asked anyone with additional information to contact the sheriff’s office.

Community impact

Motorcycle safety is a recurring concern for residents who travel the rural roads surrounding Waldo Lake and the broader Lane County area. Local law‑enforcement agencies regularly remind riders to wear helmets, obey speed limits, and stay alert for wildlife and changing road conditions, especially on winding mountain routes.

About Waldo Lake

Waldo Lake, one of Oregon’s largest natural lakes, attracts outdoor enthusiasts for fishing, hiking, and boating. The surrounding roads, while scenic, can be narrow and steep, requiring extra caution from drivers and motorcyclists alike.

Resources for riders

Motorcyclists seeking safety tips can consult the Oregon Department of Transportation’s motorcycle safety guide or attend a local rider‑training course offered by the Lane County Sheriff’s Office. These programs emphasize proper gear, defensive riding techniques, and awareness of local road hazards.

The sheriff’s office will release further findings as the investigation progresses.
