The film ‘Rosebush Pruning’ features a wealthy, dysfunctional family with a strong interest in fashion. Costume designer Bina Daigeler worked with the film’s director, Karim Aïnouz, to create a unique look for each character.
Creating the Characters’ Looks
Daigeler drew inspiration from various sources, including the Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla. She wanted to merge the family’s love of fashion with their dysfunctional relationships, creating a ‘dress up party’ atmosphere during fittings.
The four siblings in the film, all adults still living at home, have distinct styles. Robert, the youngest, favors loud, flashy clothing, while Ed prefers more subdued, textured looks. Jack, the eldest, often wears plain tees and shirts, but has a standout moment in a pistachio green suit.
Anna, the sister, has a wardrobe that reflects the family’s relationship with clothes and money. Daigeler chose classic brands like Chanel, but distorted them to fit Anna’s character. A bright orange and pink tweed dress is a notable example of this.
Working with the Actors
Daigeler enjoyed working with the actors, particularly Riley Keough, who played Anna. Keough suggested wearing a bra and shawl to a lunch scene, which added to the character’s eccentricity.
The film’s plot twist, which reveals the siblings’ mother is alive, allowed Daigeler to explore new environments and styles. She chose looser silhouettes for the mother and her girlfriend, creating a simpler, more elegant look.
