The Corpus Christi Monastery on Mockingbird Road in the Lower Valley of El Paso closed its doors Sunday, the Catholic Diocese of El Paso said. The shutdown ends decades of continuous activity at the site.
The diocese reported the closure and named the community that ran the house. The monastery had stood in the neighborhood since 1967 and served local residents for many years.
The diocese said the Perpetual Adorers of the Most Holy Sacrament, also called the Adoratrices, operated the monastery.
The community had been noted as a “devoted presence” in the Lower Valley since it opened. The monastery’s long history tied it to generations of local Catholics.
The closure marks a significant change for the area. The building on Mockingbird Road is no longer an active religious house after nearly six decades of ministry.
Local leaders and parishioners will now look ahead to how the diocese and community will handle the next steps for the property and the people connected to the monastery.
