Cooling mattresses: benefits, drawbacks and expert guidance

More than half of American sleepers report feeling too warm at night, which can affect both mental and physical health. A cooling mattress aims to address that problem by using materials and technologies that promote airflow and manage moisture.

What makes a mattress “cooling”?

Cooling mattresses are built with breathable fabrics such as organic cotton, wool or natural latex, and often incorporate individually wrapped coils to improve airflow. According to Arin Schultz, chief growth officer at Naturepedic, these natural materials naturally dissipate heat better than traditional petroleum‑based foams.

Passive versus active cooling

There are two primary approaches. Passive cooling relies on heat‑dissipating materials—phase‑change capsules, conductive minerals like graphite or copper, and gel‑infused foams—that draw heat away from the body. Active cooling adds mechanical systems. Air‑based models use ventilated mattresses with fan‑equipped bases, while water‑based systems circulate cooled water through a mattress cover. Active systems tend to be more expensive and may require additional maintenance.

Who might benefit?

Anyone can gain from a cooler sleep environment, but the technology is especially helpful for:

  • Hot sleepers who struggle to find a cool spot on the bed
  • People who experience night sweats not caused by medical conditions
  • Couples who tend to overheat when sharing a bed
  • Fans of memory foam who find it traps heat

Schultz notes that a breathable mattress supports the body’s natural drop in core temperature of one to two degrees as it prepares for sleep.

Which type performs best?

Hybrid mattresses with coil systems generally allow the most airflow, making them the most effective at staying cool throughout the night. Traditional memory foam can become warm, though some newer models incorporate phase‑change or gel technologies that help for the first 30‑90 minutes of sleep.

Cooling versus smart mattresses

While many smart mattresses include cooling features, not all cooling mattresses are “smart.” Smart models add sensors, sleep‑tracking and AI‑driven adjustments for pressure and temperature. Cooling mattresses, by contrast, focus solely on temperature regulation through passive or active means.

Are they worth the cost?

Sleep expert Ely Tsern says that quality sleep is a foundation for overall wellness, so an investment that improves rest can be justified. For hot sleepers who frequently toss and turn, a cooling mattress—especially a hybrid with good airflow—may provide noticeable relief. Those considering active cooling should weigh the higher price and potential maintenance against the added temperature control.
