Controversial Banana Artwork Stolen Again in France

The Centre Pompidou-Metz museum in eastern France has reported the theft of a banana from Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan’s controversial artwork, ‘Comedian.’ The piece, known for its simplicity and satirical edge, consists of a banana taped to a wall. This latest incident was reported by a security guard on Saturday, leading the museum to file a legal complaint against unknown individuals.

Art and Absurdity

The museum expressed that the theft undermines the respect due to artworks on display and temporarily deprives visitors of the full exhibition experience. However, the museum acted swiftly to replace the banana, restoring the artwork to its original form. ‘Comedian’ is intended to critique the absurdity of financial speculation and the fragility of knowledge systems in the art market, according to the museum’s statement.

This is not the first time ‘Comedian’ has been involved in unusual incidents. In 2019, performance artist David Datuna famously ate the banana at the Art Basel Miami art fair. Similar incidents occurred in 2023 at the Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul and in 2024 when Chinese collector Justin Sun purchased and ate the banana after acquiring the piece for $6.24 million at auction.

Artist’s Provocative Legacy

Maurizio Cattelan is renowned for his satirical works that challenge cultural norms and provoke debate. Another of his notable pieces, a solid 18-carat-gold toilet titled ‘America,’ was valued at around $6 million and was stolen in 2019 from Blenheim Palace in England. The toilet has never been recovered. Cattelan’s works continue to spark discussions about the nature and value of art in contemporary society.
