Connecticut Sun President Jennifer Rizzotti told local media on Monday that she will move to Houston with the team and assume the role of President of Basketball Operations for the franchise in its new home.
Rizzotti’s deep Connecticut roots and basketball pedigree
Rizzotti, a native of New Fairfield, Connecticut, was named President of the Connecticut Sun in 2021. She played college basketball at the University of Connecticut, where she started at point guard in 1995 and helped the Huskies capture their first national championship with an undefeated 35‑0 season.
After college, Rizzotti enjoyed a professional playing career in the WNBA, winning two championships with the Houston Comets. She later spent 17 seasons as head coach of the University of Hartford women’s basketball program and also coached at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
Transition to Houston
In the interview, Rizzotti explained that the move to Houston aligns with the organization’s long‑term vision for growth and community engagement. “I’m excited to bring the Sun’s culture of excellence to Houston and work closely with our players, staff, and fans to build something special,” she said.
The Connecticut Sun’s final home game at Mohegan Sun Arena is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 24, giving local fans one last opportunity to see the team play in Connecticut before the transition.
What the move means for fans
While the relocation marks a significant change for Connecticut supporters, the organization emphasized its commitment to maintaining strong ties with the state. Community outreach programs and youth basketball initiatives will continue under the new Houston‑based structure.
Houston residents can look forward to a fresh WNBA presence in the city, with Rizzotti’s leadership promising a focus on competitive success and community involvement.
Looking ahead
Rizzotti’s appointment as President of Basketball Operations underscores the franchise’s dedication to experienced leadership. Her extensive background as a player, coach, and executive positions her to guide the team through this pivotal period.
Fans of both Connecticut and Houston will be watching closely as the Sun embark on this new chapter, hoping the blend of seasoned leadership and local enthusiasm will translate into on‑court victories.
