Connecticut experts discuss GLP-1 medications, benefits and monitoring needs

In a studio discussion aired on NBC Connecticut, health reporters Briceyda Landaverde, Taylor Regan and medical analyst Eddie Randle examined the expanding role of GLP‑1 medications. The conversation, part of the station’s “Beyond the Scale” series, focused on research findings, potential benefits, risks and the importance of ongoing medical supervision.

Medical oversight emphasized

Landaverde noted that patients beginning GLP‑1 therapy should see a health professional six to twelve times in the first year. Visits can be with a primary‑care physician, a nutritionist, a nurse practitioner or via telehealth, though scheduling challenges may arise. “Doctors stress the need for frequent check‑ins because the medication changes the body dramatically,” she said.

Dr. Mahima Gulati of UConn Health echoed that sentiment, warning that patients must avoid malnutrition and maintain essential supplements such as vitamin B12 and vitamin D3. “Diet is the most important factor,” Dr. Gulati said. “We need to ensure weight loss is healthy, preserving muscle mass and overall well‑being.”

Beyond weight loss: fertility, chronic disease and addiction

The panel highlighted emerging data on GLP‑1 use for women facing fertility challenges, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis. While research is still evolving, early reports suggest improvements in hormonal balance and menstrual regularity.

GLP‑1 drugs are also being studied for heart disease, kidney and liver conditions, sleep apnea and other chronic illnesses linked to insulin resistance. “Disruptions in insulin signaling underlie many health problems,” Regan explained, underscoring the potential broad impact of these medications.

Perhaps most striking was the discussion of GLP‑1s as a tool in substance‑use treatment. Dr. Ania Jastreboff of Yale’s Obesity Research Center described a pilot study funded by the National Institutes of Health that examines whether semaglutide can reduce alcohol consumption in patients with obesity and alcohol‑use disorder. Early observations indicate participants may cut back on drinking when on the medication, though the research remains in early phases.

Family and community support

Eddie Randle asked why friends and family matter during rapid weight loss. Landaverde responded that shared activities—such as walking together or swapping snack choices—can provide motivation and reduce feelings of isolation. “Joining a loved one on a healthier path reinforces both physical and emotional health,” she said.

Looking ahead

The hosts encouraged viewers to submit questions and stay tuned for the next installment of the series, which will continue exploring GLP‑1 research and patient experiences. For more information, viewers can visit NBC Connecticut’s website.
