A memorial was held for Meah Bordenave-Jenkins, a 19-year-old nursing student who was killed at a Fourth of July block party in Compton. Dozens of balloons were released on the Manhattan Beach Pier to honor her memory.
A Life Cut Short
Bordenave-Jenkins was a sophomore at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and was visiting her grandmother in Inglewood when she was killed. Her family described her as a bright and ambitious young woman who was dedicated to her studies and her community.
According to her family, a man with a gun opened fire at the celebration, which was attended by children and families. Bordenave-Jenkins’ sister, Kayla, believes that the event should have been more secure. "It should have been permitted," she said. "There were a lot of things wrong with how that event was put together."
Eric Washington, a community activist, was also killed in the shooting. His family said he was shot while trying to deescalate a conflict at the party.
As of Wednesday night, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. The community is seeking answers and calling for greater accountability.
