Como Zoo welcomes two new western lowland gorillas, Kamba and Nora

St. Paul residents received a delightful surprise this week as Como Park Zoo and Conservatory opened its gates to two new western lowland gorillas. Kamba, who turned 22 on Tuesday, and her younger companion Nora, age 12, arrived from Brookfield Zoo in Chicago and were introduced to the public during a special unveiling.

Why the arrival matters for conservation

The transfer was part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Gorilla Species Survival Plan, a cooperative effort designed to maintain healthy, genetically diverse populations of this critically endangered species. By moving animals between accredited facilities, the program helps ensure long‑term viability and provides opportunities for public education.

What visitors can expect

Both gorillas have access to an outdoor yard, but Como Zoo, like many modern zoological institutions, allows its animals the choice to stay indoors or venture outside. This means that sightings may vary, but the zoo staff are prepared to give guests a chance to observe the gorillas whenever they are in the open.

“We are thrilled to introduce Kamba and Nora,” said Erica Prosser, director of Como Zoo. “Their arrival begins an exciting new chapter for Gorilla Forest and gives us another opportunity to inspire people to learn about and care for this critically endangered species.”

Family-friendly learning

The addition of Kamba and Nora offers a fresh educational platform for families, school groups, and wildlife enthusiasts. Interactive signage and docent talks will highlight the gorillas’ natural habitats, social behaviors, and the challenges they face in the wild due to habitat loss and poaching.

Local teachers have already incorporated the new residents into lesson plans, emphasizing stewardship and the importance of conservation efforts that extend beyond the zoo’s walls. For many parents, the chance to watch these gentle giants up close reinforces values of respect for God‑created life and the responsibility to protect it.

Supporting the community

Como Zoo remains a beloved St. Paul institution, drawing thousands of visitors each year and contributing to the city’s cultural and economic vitality. The arrival of Kamba and Nora underscores the zoo’s ongoing commitment to providing enriching experiences while advancing wildlife preservation.

Visitors are encouraged to check the zoo’s website for the latest updates on gorilla viewing times and upcoming educational programs. As the gorillas settle into their new home, the community can look forward to many memorable moments watching these remarkable animals thrive.
