Community Voices Concerns Over Highway 60 Safety Improvements

Springfield’s Highway 60 corridor, particularly the stretch east of the Highway 65 interchange, is under scrutiny as transportation planners seek community input on improving its safety. The Ozarks Transportation Organization (OTO) has initiated a Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) study to explore solutions for the crash-prone area, following feedback from local stakeholders.

Community Engagement

The first public listening session was held at Courageous Church, drawing over 200 attendees, including residents and business owners. Lead Pastor Tyler Padgitt expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort, highlighting the importance of community involvement in shaping the future of this vital corridor.

Residents shared their concerns and suggestions with transportation experts, emphasizing the need for safe and accessible routes. Sharon Igou, a church member, voiced worries about the difficulty of navigating certain intersections, particularly for young drivers.

Safety Concerns

Traffic footage presented during the meeting revealed numerous near-crashes, defined as incidents with less than three seconds of separation between vehicles. The study area recorded 670 crashes between 2020 and 2024, with four fatalities and many injuries.

Steve Prange of CMT assured attendees that all potential solutions, including overpasses and outer road systems, are being considered. The PEL study, funded primarily by federal resources, aims to identify feasible infrastructure improvements by spring 2027.

Balancing Safety and Development

While safety remains a top priority, stakeholders are also concerned about maintaining access to businesses and fostering development along Highway 60. The proposed removal of at-grade driveways and intersections has raised concerns about increased travel distances for local destinations.

Pastor Padgitt and other community leaders advocate for solutions that balance safety with accessibility, ensuring that Springfield’s growth potential is not hindered. The area around the 60/65 interchange is seen as a key development zone, with significant investment opportunities on the horizon.
