Comfort, Texas – The Comfort Volunteer Fire Department, fresh from its heroic response to the catastrophic Hill Country floods on July 4, 2025, is calling on neighbors to support its first annual Golf Classic. The tournament will be held Friday, Oct. 9, at the Buckhorn Golf Course in Comfort.
Why the fundraiser matters
Volunteer firefighters in Comfort routinely step up during regional emergencies, but the department operates under tight financial constraints. While partially funded by government sources, the non‑profit relies heavily on community contributions to purchase critical equipment.
Turnout gear—protective suits, helmets and boots—costs roughly $6,000 per firefighter. Many volunteers are still waiting for proper gear until sufficient funds are raised. A fire engine can cost around $500,000, and the department recently lost a truck after it was struck on a highway while crews were assisting motorists. The vehicle absorbed the impact, protecting both firefighters and civilians, but the loss underscores the need for replacement equipment.
Event details
The Golf Classic will feature a four‑person scramble format. Check‑in begins at 7:00 a.m., with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. Each team pays a $500 entry fee, which includes green fees, a cart, range balls, breakfast and lunch. Contests will include long‑drive, putting and closest‑to‑the‑pin competitions, with awards presented after play.
Originally capped at 80 golfers, Buckhorn Golf Course expanded capacity to accommodate up to 144 players, reflecting strong community interest. Organizers say registration has already exceeded expectations, signaling robust local support for the department’s mission.
How the community can help
Beyond participating in the tournament, residents can sponsor holes, donate directly to the department, or volunteer their time. All proceeds will go straight to purchasing lifesaving equipment, volunteer turnout gear, training programs and other emergency response resources.
“These volunteers show up when their neighbors need them most,” said a department representative. “Now the community has an opportunity to show up for them.”
