Colorado Springs police and FBI hike Manitou Incline to honor 9/11 first responders

On Friday morning, Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) officers and agents from FBI Denver will meet at the base of the Manitou Incline for a commemorative climb. The event, scheduled to begin at 7:15 a.m., is intended to honor the first responders who risked their lives during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, now marking their 25th anniversary.

Why the Manitou Incline?

The steep, physically demanding trail was chosen deliberately. CSPD officials explained that the grueling ascent mirrors the stamina and dedication shown by police, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and other public‑safety heroes on that fateful day. By tackling the same challenge, participants aim to embody the spirit of service and sacrifice that defined the response to the attacks.

Logistics and community support

The Colorado Springs Police Protective Association, the local SHIELD 616 organization, and the Broadmoor will provide parking, food, and drinks for participants and spectators. Because the climb is a closed‑to‑the‑public event, the Manitou Incline Trail will remain closed until 9 a.m. on Friday, ensuring a safe and orderly tribute.

Broader coverage

KRDO13 will offer all‑day coverage of the 9/11 anniversary, including segments on the attacks in New York City, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. Viewers can tune in starting with the station’s “Good Morning Colorado” program at 4:30 a.m. The station also encourages residents to stay informed by downloading the KRDO13 app, available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Community significance

Events like this reinforce the close ties between law‑enforcement agencies and the citizens they protect. By publicly honoring the men and women who answered the call on September 11, CSPD and the FBI demonstrate a shared commitment to remembering the past while continuing to safeguard the community today. Local families, faith groups, and civic organizations are invited to attend the ceremony at the trailhead, offering prayers and words of gratitude.

Looking ahead

While the climb is a one‑time tribute, CSPD plans to incorporate similar remembrance activities into future community‑engagement initiatives. The department hopes that the physical challenge will inspire both participants and onlookers to reflect on the values of courage, sacrifice, and service that underpin a strong, faith‑centered community.
