Colorado Springs Airport to Conduct Full-Scale Emergency Drill on Aug. 19

On Wednesday, Aug. 19, the Colorado Springs Airport will host a full‑scale emergency response exercise from 9 a.m. to noon. The drill is being coordinated with the City of Colorado Springs, the Colorado Springs Fire Department, the Colorado Springs Police Department and the Pikes Peak Regional Office of Emergency Management.

Airport officials have warned residents and travelers that increased activity from emergency vehicles and personnel will be visible throughout the airport grounds. Simulated smoke and flames are expected on the northwest side of the property, providing a realistic backdrop for the training scenario. Organizers stress that the exercise is purely a drill; there is no actual emergency and flight operations will continue uninterrupted.

The exercise satisfies a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirement that every public airport conduct a full‑scale emergency response drill at least once every three years. The FAA mandates that airports demonstrate coordinated response capabilities for incidents such as aircraft accidents, fires, hazardous material releases or other crises that could affect aviation safety.

Participants will practice a range of response actions, including fire suppression, rescue operations, medical triage, incident command coordination and communication with airline and airport personnel. The joint effort allows local first‑responders to rehearse inter‑agency cooperation, test equipment and refine procedures that protect passengers, employees and the surrounding community.

City officials note that the drill aligns with broader public‑safety initiatives in Colorado Springs, which have emphasized preparedness after recent regional emergencies. By conducting the exercise in a controlled environment, the agencies aim to identify any gaps in response plans and ensure that resources are ready should a real incident occur.

Members of the public are encouraged to stay informed through local news outlets and the airport’s official channels. While the simulated smoke may be visible from nearby roads, there is no cause for concern, and the exercise will not disrupt scheduled flights or airport services.

For additional information, residents can contact the Colorado Springs Airport’s public‑affairs office or follow updates on the city’s emergency management website.
