Collinwood High School’s Final Days Captured by Students

Collinwood High School, a historic institution in Ohio, has closed its doors after its final graduation ceremony. The event was marked by a procession of alumni, dressed in the school’s traditional white and blue, followed by the last graduating class of just 33 students in silver caps and gowns. This closure marks the end of an era for a school that once boasted a student body of 4,000, offering a wide range of academic and extracurricular activities.

Community Reflections

Alumni have expressed their disappointment and anger over the closure at various board meetings and town halls. The school has been a cornerstone of the community, shaping the lives of many young people over the years. Current students share mixed emotions, feeling both nervous about their future and sad to leave friends behind. Despite having fewer opportunities than past students, they cherish the community and support they received from teachers and staff.

Student Photo Project

To capture the essence of their final days, 20 students were given disposable cameras to document their experiences. The resulting photos, developed with the help of Dodd Camera’s Cleveland store, provide a poignant look at the relationships and memories formed at Collinwood. The images depict everything from teachers and lunch staff who have made a lasting impact, to the empty hallways and classrooms that once buzzed with activity.

Students like Jayda Vales and Triana White captured candid moments of each other, showcasing the friendships that have been a significant part of their high school experience. The photos also highlight the stark contrast between the school’s vibrant past and its quieter present, with images of empty spaces and leftover educational materials.

A Legacy of Community

Collinwood High School may be closing, but the memories and community spirit it fostered will endure. The students’ photo project serves as a testament to the lasting impact of the school and the importance of community in shaping young lives. As the school closes, the students and alumni carry forward the lessons and friendships that defined their time at Collinwood.
