Wichita, Kansas – As Halloween approaches, families in the historic College Hill neighborhood are preparing a neighborhood‑wide celebration that showcases both devotion to tradition and generous spending. Homeowners report spending several hundred dollars each year on decorations and candy, a cost they view as an investment in community spirit.
Neighbors share the workload and the joy
“I would say I spend several hundred dollars every year on decorations, and a few hundred dollars on candy,” said Nora Rayl, a longtime resident. Rayl added that the effort is driven by love for the neighborhood: “We do this because we love it, and we love our community.” Laura Van Huss echoed the sentiment, noting that each year builds on the previous one. “You just build on it year after year,” she said.
Many families collaborate, swapping ideas and helping each other bring their visions to life. Van Huss described her home’s theme this year as the classic “Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” featuring a hand‑painted Headless Horseman and custom banners created with her mother many years ago.
Homes become walking museums
Rayl likened the neighborhood to a museum, with each house offering a new exhibit. Visitors can stroll from one elaborate set to the next, enjoying everything from spooky silhouettes to intricate lighting displays. “It’s like being a museum curator, because you’re walking from exhibit to exhibit,” she said.
Local visitors share the enthusiasm. Brittani Bass, who toured the area on Friday, praised the effort: “It’s so nice that they take the time to do it for everyone, so all the kids and adults can enjoy it.” Her companion, Chris Bass, agreed, noting that such a concentration of decorations is rare in other cities.
Safety measures and road closures
To ensure a safe evening for the expected crowds of trick‑or‑treaters, the Wichita Police Department will close several streets in College Hill from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Halloween. Barricades will be placed on Broadview, Belmont and Crestway between Douglas and 1st Street.
Residents are excited for the upcoming night. “Happy Halloween! We’re happy to have you here,” Rayl said, adding that the smiles on children’s faces make the effort worthwhile. Van Huss summed it up: “It’s so cool to see the smiles on their faces and watch their eyes check out all the decorations. It’s awesome.”
Why the tradition matters
The College Hill celebration reflects a broader commitment to family values and community cohesion. By investing time, money and creativity, neighbors reinforce the bonds that make the area a desirable place to raise children and foster a sense of shared responsibility.
As Wichita prepares for a weekend Halloween, College Hill stands out as a shining example of how local traditions can bring families together, support local businesses that supply decorations and candy, and create lasting memories for both residents and visitors.
