College Football Playoff Starts 30‑Day Talks with ESPN on 24‑Team Expansion

The College Football Playoff (CFP) announced Tuesday that it has entered a 30‑day exclusive negotiating window with its broadcast partner ESPN. The purpose of the window is to discuss a possible expansion of the playoff field from the current 12 teams to 24.

What the CFP said

In a statement, the CFP said, “The CFP has decided to move forward in its evaluation of potential playoff expansion to 24 teams by beginning a media‑rights discussion with ESPN. This does not represent a decision or commitment to expand, but rather an opportunity to engage with ESPN and gather additional information to help determine a path forward. The CFP will provide additional updates when appropriate.”

Timeline and process

ESPN must receive a formal notification letter before the window can officially open, but a network report indicated the discussions could begin as early as Wednesday. The window will remain open for 30 days, after which the CFP will assess the information gathered and decide on next steps.

Key issues under review

One of the central questions is whether the removal of conference title games would be offset by the additional revenue a 24‑team format could generate. The Big Ten and SEC, the two Power‑Four conferences with final authority over playoff format changes, must reach an agreement by Dec. 1 for any expansion to be implemented for the 2027 season.

The SEC has previously expressed support for a 16‑team expansion, while the Big Ten is pushing for a full 24‑team field. The Big Ten’s proposal would guarantee only one spot for the Group of Six conferences, with the remaining 23 spots awarded to the best teams nationwide, eliminating automatic qualifiers and conference title games.

SEC’s conditions

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey sent a memo to CFP committee members outlining the league’s requirements for a 24‑team playoff. The SEC wants assurance that any revenue lost from canceling its conference title game would be fully recouped. Additionally, the league seeks a rule that Power‑Four conference teams must play at least ten games against other Power‑Four opponents or Notre Dame to remain playoff‑eligible.

Potential impact

If approved, a 24‑team playoff could dramatically increase the number of postseason games, offering more exposure for mid‑major programs and potentially boosting television revenue. However, it would also require a reevaluation of scheduling, travel logistics, and the financial models of the participating conferences.

Stakeholders, including university presidents, athletic directors, and conference commissioners, will be closely watching the outcome of the CFP‑ESPN talks. The next update from the CFP is expected after the 30‑day window closes.
