College and Career Day at New Mexico State Fair Provides Free Education Resources

The New Mexico State Fair is turning Main Street into a hub of higher‑education opportunity this Wednesday. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the fair’s College and Career Day brings together over 25 colleges and universities from across the state, along with state officials, to help students and families navigate the path to post‑secondary success.

Free scholarship information on display

Attendees can speak directly with representatives about the Opportunity Scholarship and the Lottery Scholarship, two tuition‑free programs that cover the cost of in‑state tuition for eligible New Mexicans. State officials are on hand to answer questions about eligibility, application deadlines, and how the scholarships can be combined with other financial aid.

Beyond the traditional four‑year degree

Stephanie Rodriguez, cabinet secretary for the New Mexico Higher Education Department, emphasized that the fair highlights alternatives to the classic two‑year or four‑year college track. “We’re not really looking at college as the traditional two‑year, four‑year path anymore, although those are important and available, but there’s also these non‑credit programs that are six to 16 weeks that are really fast‑paced, and people can start a job right away with really good wages,” Rodriguez said.

These short‑term, non‑credit programs include technical certifications, apprenticeship pipelines, and industry‑specific training that can lead directly to skilled‑worker positions in fields such as advanced manufacturing, health‑care support, and information technology.

Local families benefit from on‑site guidance

Parents appreciate the convenience of having college counselors, financial‑aid officers, and workforce‑development experts gathered in one place. “It’s a relief to have everything in one spot,” said Maria Hernandez, a mother of two high‑school seniors from Albuquerque. “We can compare options, ask about scholarships, and get a realistic sense of what each path looks like for our kids.”

The event also features booths from community colleges, four‑year universities, and private institutions, each offering brochures, enrollment guides, and on‑the‑spot application assistance. Several schools are providing on‑site enrollment incentives, such as waived application fees for students who complete the process during the fair.

Supporting New Mexico’s workforce needs

State leaders view the College and Career Day as a strategic effort to address the state’s workforce gaps. By exposing students to a range of educational pathways—including fast‑track programs that feed directly into high‑demand jobs—the fair aims to boost employment rates and keep talent within New Mexico.

“Our goal is to ensure every New Mexican has a clear, affordable route to a career that offers a living wage,” Rodriguez added. “When families see the options available, they’re more likely to pursue the education that matches their goals and the needs of our economy.”

How to attend

The fair’s College and Career Day is open to the public and requires no registration. Visitors should arrive early to explore the numerous booths and attend scheduled information sessions throughout the day. Parking is available in the fair’s main lot, and family‑friendly amenities such as rest areas and food vendors are on site.
