A South Carolina man has found himself at the center of the sports memorabilia world after landing a rare NBA debut patch card. Jason Williams, a machine shop owner from Clover, South Carolina, entered a break of Topps Chrome Update Basketball and landed the one-of-one Cooper Flagg debut patch card.
A Life-Changing Moment
Williams paid $515 for the Dallas Mavericks in a break conducted by Rhody Breakers, based in Rhode Island. When the card was revealed, Williams was overcome with emotion, describing the moment as surreal. The card features a patch from the jersey Flagg wore in his NBA debut and has already drawn several multimillion-dollar offers, including one from the Dallas Mavericks for lower-level season tickets for 32 years and a package of other perks.
Williams, a father of five, has been collecting sports cards on and off since he was 12. He discovered online breaks about six years ago and has been participating in them ever since. The adrenaline from landing the rare card was so intense that Williams didn’t sleep that night, instead staying up talking with others in the online chat before going to work at 5 a.m.
A New Decision
Now, Williams has another decision to make: what to do with the card. For now, he says he’s in no rush to make a deal, looking forward to the experiences that he and his family will get to enjoy as a result of his good fortune. The card has opened up new possibilities for Williams, and he’s excited to see what the future holds.
