There is a moment, usually about halfway through your first pint at GoodLife Brewing Company, when Bend stops feeling like a destination and starts feeling like home. Maybe it is the cavernous yet cozy taproom, with its soaring ceilings and walls lined with the kind of rustic wood that makes you want to linger. Maybe it is the mountain bike propped against the wall outside, or the golden retriever napping under the picnic table on the patio. Whatever the trigger, GoodLife has a way of making you feel like you belong here.
Tucked into the east side of Bend along SE Wilson Avenue, GoodLife sits in an industrial neighborhood that has quietly become one of the more interesting pockets of the city. The brewery opened in 2011, and in the years since it has built a devoted following — not just among locals who treat the taproom as a second living room, but among visitors who stumble in after a day on the trails and end up staying for hours.
The beer program is the obvious draw, and it delivers. GoodLife’s flagship Descender IPA is one of those IPAs that converts people who think they do not like IPAs. It is bright and hoppy without ever tipping into bitterness, with a clean finish that practically demands a second round. The Sweet As! Pacific Ale is lighter and endlessly refreshing — exactly what you want after a hard climb at Smith Rock or a long morning on the mountain. Seasonal releases rotate through with real creativity, so there is always something new to try alongside the dependable year-rounders.
The food program holds its own as well. The kitchen turns out satisfying pub fare with a Pacific Northwest sensibility — think loaded pretzels, fresh salads, and hearty sandwiches built for people who have actually been outside that day. Portions are generous, prices are reasonable, and the kitchen keeps pace even on busy weekend afternoons when the taproom fills up.
Speaking of weekends: the outdoor patio at GoodLife is one of the better places in Bend to spend a sunny afternoon. There is ample seating, a bocce court, and frequent live music that manages to feel festive without overwhelming conversation. Dogs are welcome, kids are welcome, and the general atmosphere is one of relaxed celebration rather than performative cool.
GoodLife also runs a solid merch shop, so you can take home a pint glass or a hoodie as a souvenir that you will actually use. But honestly, the best thing you can take home from an afternoon here is the memory of sitting in that taproom with a cold Descender in hand, watching the light shift over Bend’s endless blue sky and thinking — maybe just one more round.
If you visit Bend and skip GoodLife, you have simply left something important off the itinerary. Go fix that.
