Coeur d’Alene School Board Donates Two Portable Classrooms to Fire‑Hit Inchelium District

In a display of regional cooperation, the Coeur d’Alene School District in Idaho approved the donation of two portable classrooms to the Inchelium School District in rural Washington. The decision, made by a unanimous vote of the Coeur d’Alene board on Monday, comes as the Washington district struggles to bring students back to classrooms after wildfires damaged its facilities.

Why the donation matters

Inchelium officials estimate that students may not return to permanent classrooms until October. The portable units, though 35 years old and rated at a 60% Facilities Condition Index—well above the 30% threshold for critical condition—will provide immediate space for instruction while the district repairs fire‑damaged buildings.

Superintendent Brian Freeman of Inchelium said he was deeply moved by the offer, describing his reaction as nearly tearful. Deputy Superintendent of Operations Seth Deniston noted the district’s “heavy impact” from the fire and emphasized the goodwill of the gesture.

Condition of the donated units

The two portable classrooms are considered dilapidated by modern standards. A Facilities Condition Index score of 60% indicates they are far from the 5% rating that would denote a building in good condition. Nonetheless, removing these aging units helps Coeur d’Alene meet its own goal of eliminating outdated portable structures from its campuses.

Trustee Lisa Aitken called the arrangement a “feel‑good story,” adding that the district is pleased to assist a neighboring community in need.

Financial and logistical details

Inchelium will reimburse Coeur d’Alene for the costs associated with moving the portable classrooms. This mirrors a prior agreement in which Coeur d’Alene provided two similar units to the Kellogg School District.

Deniston indicated that once all aging portable classrooms are removed, Coeur d’Alene leaders may consider selling newer units that are still in serviceable condition.

Broader context

The donation highlights the challenges many rural school districts face when natural disasters strike, as well as the collaborative spirit that can arise between neighboring districts. While the portable classrooms are not a long‑term solution, they offer a temporary bridge that allows teachers to resume instruction and families to regain a sense of normalcy.

Both districts plan to continue monitoring the situation and explore additional support options as the recovery effort progresses.
