Coast Guard Resumes Search for Missing Michigan Mother in Bahamas

The U.S. Coast Guard has intensified its efforts to locate Lynette Hooker, a 55-year-old mother from Michigan, who went missing in early April while sailing with her husband in the Bahamas. This renewed search follows the emergence of new evidence that has prompted investigators to revisit the case.

Background of the Disappearance

Lynette Hooker was reported missing on April 5 by her husband, Brian Hooker, after she allegedly fell overboard during a sailing trip from Hope Town to Elbow Cay. The couple was navigating the waters on an 8-foot motorboat when Brian claimed that rough seas caused Lynette to fall into the water. He further stated that she had the boat’s keys in her pocket, which led to the engine shutting off, forcing him to swim to shore.

Investigation Developments

Brian Hooker was initially arrested on April 8 as a person of interest but was released without charges on April 13 after questioning. However, the case took a new turn in late May when investigators discovered GPS data from Brian’s phone that contradicted his earlier statements. This data has provided new directions for the search, leading the U.S. Coast Guard to focus on specific areas of the Sea of Abaco, near Elbow Cay.

The Coast Guard, with permission from Bahamian authorities, has deployed divers to search these newly identified areas. The sailboat used by the Hookers was seized in early May as part of the investigation.

Public and Family Interest

The disappearance of Lynette Hooker has drawn significant public interest, partly due to the couple’s active presence on social media, where they shared their sailing adventures in the Caribbean. Brian Hooker has consistently denied any wrongdoing in connection with his wife’s disappearance.

As the search continues, the community remains hopeful for answers and closure for Lynette’s family. The case highlights the challenges and complexities involved in missing person investigations, especially those occurring in international waters.
