Coast Guard Rescues Eight from Rising Tides at Santa Cruz Beach

The U.S. Coast Guard has released a video capturing the dramatic rescue of eight individuals trapped by rising tides in a cave near Panther Beach, Santa Cruz County, California, on May 17. The incident highlights the importance of being aware of local tide conditions when visiting coastal areas.

Rescue Operation Details

The rescue operation was a coordinated effort involving multiple agencies, including CAL FIRE CZU, Santa Cruz County Fire, the U.S. Coast Guard, Santa Cruz City Fire with a lifeguard, Santa Cruz Harbor Patrol, and California State Parks lifeguards. The situation unfolded when a person texted 911 around 8 p.m., reporting that 11 people were trapped in a cave near Davenport due to rising water levels.

Among those trapped, several individuals did not know how to swim, complicating the rescue efforts. The cave had two potential exits: one through the water leading to a beach with access to the bluffs, and another onto a pocket beach with a steep trail to the bluffs.

Rescue Execution

Five individuals who could swim managed to wade out of the cave with the assistance of lifeguards. The remaining three, who were unable to swim, were rescued by a Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco crew. The Coast Guard was notified by CAL FIRE at 8:16 p.m., requesting air assistance for the stranded individuals.

An MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew was dispatched and arrived at the scene by 9:20 p.m. They found three people on the beach showing symptoms of hypothermia. Each person was hoisted individually and transferred to CAL FIRE personnel for further medical evaluation. Among those rescued was a pregnant woman who sustained unknown injuries.

Safety Reminders

Authorities have issued a reminder to the public to check local tide charts before heading to the coast. Rising tides can quickly trap individuals against coastal cliffs, leaving them with no escape route. This incident serves as a cautionary tale for beachgoers to remain vigilant and informed about their surroundings.
