On a clear morning, you can watch horses exercising on nearby farms from the trail — a reminder that you are, unmistakably, in the heart of the Bluegrass. The park connects to the Legacy Trail, Lexington’s flagship multi-use path, which means a determined cyclist or runner can extend the adventure well beyond the park’s own boundaries.
Families with younger children should make a beeline for the splash pad and the expansive playground area, which is well-maintained and thoughtfully designed for different age groups. Summer weekends here have a festive, community picnic quality — coolers, lawn chairs, kids sprinting through water jets, grandparents chatting in the shade. It is exactly the kind of scene that makes you feel good about a city.
The park also hosts disc golf, open athletic fields, picnic shelters you can reserve for group gatherings, and enough open lawn that an impromptu kite-flying session is always a viable option. There is even a small lake that adds a picturesque quality to the eastern end of the property.
Admission is free. Parking is free. The only cost is a little gas to get out to Leestown Road — and the moment you step out of your car and feel that Bluegrass sky overhead, you will consider it money exceptionally well spent.
Masterson Station Park does not shout for attention. It does not need to. It simply delivers, every single time, the kind of uncomplicated, restorative outdoor experience that reminds you why green space matters.
