Cliff Drive Viewpoint Barricades Partially Removed as Traffic Study Continues

Santa Barbara city officials announced on Monday that the K‑rail barricades that have blocked both sides of the Cliff Drive viewpoint above Hendry’s Beach are now partially removed. The ocean‑side lane has been reopened to traffic, while barricades remain on the mountain‑side lane pending the results of an ongoing traffic and safety study.

City Council members, who voiced surprise when the barricades were first installed, said the partial reopening responds to growing concerns from residents and visitors about dangerous driving patterns, skid marks in circular turn‑around areas, and litter accumulating in nearby bushes. “We want to ensure the safety of drivers, pedestrians, and the natural beauty of this beloved spot,” one councilmember told NewsChannel 3‑12.

The city is also evaluating additional measures, including the possibility of closing the parking area at night to curb illegal dumping and reduce traffic congestion after dark. Extra trash cans have already been placed along the roadside, but city staff acknowledge that visible trash remains a problem.

Any permanent changes to the Cliff Drive site must clear several procedural hurdles. First, the proposal must be approved by the City Planning Commission. Following that, a coastal development permit is required, and a public hearing will be held to gather input from neighbors and stakeholders. The city says it will keep the community informed as the study progresses and as recommendations are finalized.

Community Reaction

Local residents have expressed mixed feelings. Some welcome the reopening of the ocean‑side lane, noting that it restores easier access to the scenic overlook for families and tourists. Others remain wary, pointing to the lingering skid marks and the need for stronger enforcement of traffic rules.

“We love the view, but we also want our streets to be safe,” said a nearby homeowner. “If the city can find a balance that protects both the environment and drivers, that would be ideal.”

Next Steps

The traffic study, which began shortly after the barricades were first installed, will assess vehicle flow, speed, and accident risk at the viewpoint. Results are expected later this fall, after which the city will decide whether to keep the barricades, modify them, or implement alternative safety measures such as additional signage or speed‑calming devices.

City officials encourage anyone with concerns or suggestions to attend the upcoming public hearing, the date of which will be posted on the Santa Barbara city website.
