Graffiti HeArt, an art collective in Cleveland, is welcoming newcomers and emerging artists to practice street art on the second Saturday of every month. The studio and gallery space, located at 4829 Superior Ave., hosts open sessions for aspiring artists to learn about street art and spend time with other artistic-minded people.
Learning Street Art
Valerie Schumacher, Graffiti HeArt’s deputy director and director of creative programs, established the Second Saturday program to bring the community together and create art on a regular basis. Featured artists work on a practice wall and make themselves available to answer questions and give feedback to aspiring artists.
Renowned graffiti and street artist Bob Peck regularly attends Second Saturdays and offers tips to newcomers. He advises artists to choose the right cap for their spray paint, practice how far they are from the surface, and learn to control the line. Peck also emphasizes the importance of respecting other artists’ work and not painting over their graffiti.
Graffiti HeArt’s next Second Saturday is on August 8 from noon to 3 p.m., coinciding with the nearby St. Clair-Superior Arts Festival.
