Cleveland School Enrollment to Decline

The Cleveland Metropolitan School District is expected to experience a decline in enrollment, with a projected loss of 4,300 students over the next decade. This decline is largely attributed to falling birthrates, which are impacting school districts across the country.

Enrollment Projections

A new report developed as part of the district’s long-term facilities planning effort with the state found that the district started the past school year with 1,200 fewer students than the previous year. It anticipates a further 600-student loss in the upcoming school year.

The report used information from various sources, including housing data and birth rates in Ohio and Cleveland, to formulate its predictions. Nationally, there are fewer babies being born today than there were a decade ago, leading to public school enrollment declines throughout the country.

Impact on District

The decline in enrollment will create financial pressure, as funding is based on the number of students a district enrolls. The district is already in precarious financial straits and projects a negative bank balance in 2029. This means district leaders will be left with difficult choices, including closing schools, cutting programming, laying off staff, or refusing to raise salaries.

Marguerite Roza, a researcher at the Edunomics Lab, evaluated the report and found it used a reliable approach to model enrollment trends. She warned that the current consolidation is likely not a one-time event and that the district will need to be nimble in responding to the ongoing decline in enrollment.
