This year, America celebrates its 250th birthday, and Greater Cleveland is joining in the festivities. The city has planned numerous events to commemorate this special Independence Day, ranging from patriotic celebrations to historical exhibitions.
Events and Activities
Some of the events include an official America250 event at Canal Basin Park, a Toni Morrison storyteller event at the African-American Museum, and a Cleveland Railroad Festival at the Midwest Railway Preservation Society. Additionally, the Akron Symphonic Winds will perform a concert featuring official America250 music and narration at the Cahoon Memorial Park Gazebo.
The Cleveland Public Library will also host events for kids to prepare for Independence Day, including making paper fireworks and patriotic buttons. Furthermore, various locations in the Cleveland area will display fireworks on July 4th, including Lakewood Park and Berea’s Grindstone Festival.
Other activities include touring the Cleveland Gray’s Armory Museum, visiting the Soldiers and Sailors’ Monument in Public Square, and learning about the history of money in America at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland Education and Learning Center.
More Historical Exhibitions
The Dittrick Medical History Center at Case Western Reserve University will showcase the history of birth control, while the Western Reserve Historical Society will display an exhibit on the works of four Jewish immigrant women who changed the landscape of American fashion in the early 20th century.
Residents of Cleveland can also visit the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum to experience over 70 years of American music history and culture. The city is also home to several national parks and historic sites, including the James A. Garfield home in Mentor and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
