Clark County judge to rule on Purdue star Trey Kaufman‑Renn’s NCAA eligibility case

A Clark County, Indiana judge is set to hear arguments on Wednesday regarding former Purdue University basketball player Trey Kaufman‑Renn’s request for a temporary restraining order. The order would allow him to re‑enroll at Purdue while he contests the NCAA’s recently adopted five‑season, age‑based eligibility model.

Legal challenge centered on earnings potential

Kaufman‑Renn and his legal team argue the NCAA’s rule unfairly blocks him from maximizing his earning potential after being drafted by the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves. “A lot of players in similar situations are getting another year to play college basketball and earn a lot of money, so why shouldn’t I be in that group?” he said.

His attorney, Mickey Weber, called the rule arbitrary, stating, “They said there’s no place to draw the line. I’ll tell you where to draw the line: everybody who played college basketball this year, the year they decided it was okay to play five seasons, all those guys ought to get to play five seasons.” Weber also highlighted the disparity between potential G League earnings and the millions that less‑talented players could make by staying in college.

NCAA defends its position

The NCAA maintains that Kaufman‑Renn has exhausted his eligibility and should move on to professional opportunities in the NBA, the G League, or overseas. Representing the NCAA, attorney Taylor Askew said, “If it’s about how much money he will make, we do not need to worry about whether an injunction is the proper remedy. A trial and damages is the proper remedy.”

Timberwolves’ stance

Kaufman‑Renn noted that the Minnesota Timberwolves are supportive of his decision, adding, “They understood; they weren’t going to pay me the amount of money that I was going to get if I went back and played college.” He acknowledged that most rookies do not receive large contracts.

Next steps

The judge’s ruling on the temporary restraining order is expected Wednesday. If granted, Kaufman‑Renn could return to Purdue while the broader injunction against the NCAA’s eligibility model is scheduled for a later hearing.
