Clackamas County SWAT team immobilizes suspect’s tractor during Oregon standoff

Clackamas County, Ore. – On Saturday afternoon, a tense standoff erupted in a rural residential area south of Portland when 53‑year‑old Erik Gordon Shunn opened fire on professional arborists hired to trim trees on a neighbor’s property. According to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), Shunn discharged over 200 rounds during the incident, endangering workers and nearby residents.

SWAT response and dramatic vehicle maneuver

CCSO drones captured Shunn firing directly at the aircraft, prompting a rapid deployment of the county’s SWAT team. After arriving on scene, officers observed Shunn maneuvering a compact tractor in his driveway, apparently attempting to create a barricade. In a decisive move, a SWAT vehicle rammed the tractor, pinning it against the house and creating a window for officers to safely close in.

Several SWAT personnel exited the vehicle and entered the home, where they found Shunn separated from his rifle. The officers seized the opportunity, believing it offered the highest likelihood of a safe apprehension. Shunn was taken into custody without further gunfire.

Charges and aftermath

Shunn now faces multiple felony charges, including second‑degree attempted murder, first‑degree attempted assault, reckless endangerment, unlawful use of a weapon, menacing, unlawful possession of firearms, first‑degree attempted criminal mischief, and interference with a peace officer. He is being held without bail at the Clackamas County Jail.

First responders also checked on the arborists and neighboring residents, confirming that none were injured. Shunn’s mother, who was present in the home during the standoff, was unharmed.

Community safety and law‑enforcement tactics

The incident underscores the challenges rural law‑enforcement faces when confronting heavily armed individuals. CCSO officials highlighted the use of drone surveillance and the tactical decision to immobilize the suspect’s vehicle as key factors that prevented further violence. While the community expressed relief that no one was hurt, the episode has sparked discussions about the need for continued vigilance and resources for local sheriffs in protecting both workers and residents.

Authorities continue to investigate the motive behind Shunn’s attack on the tree‑cutting crew and will assess any additional security measures needed to safeguard similar work sites in the future.
