Investigation Underway
The DeLand Police Department is still hunting for a suspect and has not identified any potential motive. Rose and Campbell were friends since childhood and were in DeLand to mourn the death of Campbell’s family’s 8-year-old dog.
Rose, who was home on break from The Citadel Military College of South Carolina, had recently become a member of the South Carolina Army National Guard. His aunt, Jaimie Scarola, said his life was taken too soon and that he was willing to fight for the country’s freedom.
Police released a screenshot of surveillance video showing the two walking together on Tuesday evening, but it’s not yet known if they were targeted. A search warrant was executed on Saturday night at a home in DeLand with the help of the Volusia Sheriff’s Office SWAT team and the FBI’s Safe Streets Task Force.
