Cinde Warmington Wins New Hampshire Democratic Gubernatorial Nomination Amid Purdue Pharma Controversy

New Hampshire’s Democratic Party officially nominated Cinde Warmington for governor on Tuesday night after she ran unopposed in the primary. Warmington, a former member of the state’s Executive Council, will now challenge incumbent Republican Governor Kelly Ayotte in the November 3 general election.

Background and controversy

Warmington’s campaign has been dogged by attacks from the Republican Governors Association (RGA), which called her prior representation of Purdue Pharma – the maker of the addictive pain medication OxyContin – a disqualifying factor. The RGA argued that her role in “fueling the opioid epidemic” and describing OxyContin as a “miracle drug” showed a willingness to put profit over the safety of New Hampshire families.

Warmington responded in a video titled “Setting the Record Straight,” saying her involvement with Purdue was limited and that she was unaware of the company’s fraudulent practices at the time. She highlighted her personal connection to the crisis, noting that her father struggled with addiction, and emphasized her commitment to protecting families from the opioid scourge.

Election history

Warmington previously sought the governorship in 2024, losing the Democratic primary to Joyce Craig, who later fell to Gov. Kelly Ayotte in the general election (53.6% to 44.3%). In her 2026 campaign, Warmington is positioning herself as a champion of affordability, warning that rising housing costs, grocery prices, electricity rates, and property taxes are crushing working families.

Policy positions

While aligning with many Democratic priorities, Warmington also adopted several positions that cross party lines. She supports pushing back against President Trump’s immigration enforcement actions by ICE, proposes data‑center construction guardrails, and calls for restrictions on investor groups buying housing. Notably, she pledged to eliminate both sales and income taxes if elected.

What’s next

With the Democratic nomination secured, Warmington will focus on contrasting her platform with Governor Ayotte’s record. Ayotte, who won the 2024 race with a decisive margin, is likely to highlight the Trump administration’s economic successes and the importance of limited government, themes that resonate with many New Hampshire voters.

The upcoming general election will test whether New Hampshire voters prioritize Warmington’s affordability agenda and her promises to cut taxes, or whether they remain aligned with the incumbent’s conservative approach to governance.
