Cincinnati firefighter Ryan Zwick was laid to rest with honors on Wednesday. He died last week from occupational cancer, which he was diagnosed with a year ago and is recognized as a line-of-duty death.
Zwick’s funeral started Wednesday morning at St. Peter in Chains Basilica. There was a procession from Spring Grove Cemetery to the cathedral at 9 a.m. Before heading to the cathedral, firefighters gathered under Cincinnati ladders 19 and 20, which held up the American and Thin Blue Line flags.
There was a moment of silence as bells rang out from outside the cathedral to honor Zwick. Firefighter Matt Alter says Wednesday was a tough day, as they laid their brother to rest. Alter stated that the day was a time for them to get together and pay respects, not just to honor Zwick, but to also make sure that his family knows that they are there for him, not just today, but also in the future.
Zwick’s family is asking that any donations go to the Cincinnati Firefighters Charitable Fund, a nonprofit that supports firefighters battling cancer. Anyone who wants to support can write a check or money order, made out to the Cincinnati Firefighters Charitable Fund. The address is 1011 W. 8th Street, Cincinnati OH, 45203.
