A Chinese lawyer, Xu Yao, has been executed for the murder of Lin Qi, a billionaire gaming tycoon who played a key role in adapting the ‘3 Body Problem’ series for Netflix. The execution was reported by Chinese state media and confirmed by Three Body Universe, the company Lin once owned.
The Crime
In 2020, Xu poisoned Lin by giving him pills he claimed were probiotics, but which contained lethal toxins. Lin, who was deeply involved in securing the rights to adapt Liu Cixin’s sci-fi trilogy, died on Christmas Day 2020 after being hospitalized for 10 days. The toxins found in his body included mercury and tetrodotoxin.
Background and Motive
Xu, a lawyer who had worked with Lin, was motivated by a dispute over company management. He had set up a lab in a Shanghai suburb and acquired toxins from the dark web, inspired by the American series ‘Breaking Bad’. Xu had also poisoned beverages in the offices of other executives, causing several to fall ill.
Legal Proceedings
Xu was quickly identified as a suspect and was sentenced to death by a Shanghai court. His execution took place two years after the sentencing. The case has been widely covered by Chinese media, highlighting the gruesome details of Xu’s plot.
Three Body Universe expressed gratitude for the justice served, honoring Lin’s legacy as a fan and developer of the ‘3 Body Problem’ franchise.
