Chinese Humanoid Robot Sets New 100‑Meter Sprint Record at 9.39 Seconds

Beijing hosted the second edition of the World Humanoid Robot Games on Saturday, showcasing rapid advances in robotics that many observers say are intensifying the technology race with the United States. More than 2,000 humanoid robots entered the five‑day competition, which features 51 events ranging from sprinting to table tennis and soccer.

Record‑breaking sprint

In the headline event, a Beijing‑based X‑Humanoid machine ran the 100‑meter dash in 9.39 seconds, beating the human world record of 9.58 seconds set by Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt at the 2009 World Championships. The robot’s time was recorded by the official timing system used throughout the Games and was confirmed by the event organizers.

High‑jump achievement

The same X‑Humanoid platform also excelled in the standing high jump, clearing 2.88 meters. That mark exceeds the previous humanoid best of 0.95 meters recorded at the inaugural Games and surpasses the human high‑jump world record of 2.45 meters set by Cuba’s Javier Sotomayor in 1993.

Implications for the robotics field

Organizers described the results as evidence of China’s accelerating capabilities in advanced robotics, a sector that has drawn increasing attention from both industry leaders and government agencies worldwide. The Games, modeled after the Olympic format, provide a public stage for developers to test and demonstrate new technologies under competitive pressure.

While the sprint and jump performances are impressive, experts caution that the robots remain specialized for the specific tasks demonstrated. They do not yet possess the versatility, endurance, or decision‑making abilities of human athletes across a broader range of sports. Nonetheless, the achievements highlight the potential for future applications in manufacturing, logistics, and even public safety, where speed and precision are valuable.

International context

The United States continues to invest heavily in robotics research through federal agencies such as the Department of Defense and the National Science Foundation. The Beijing Games therefore serve as a benchmark for comparing progress across nations. Analysts note that the public visibility of these records may spur additional funding and talent recruitment in the United States, as policymakers weigh the strategic importance of maintaining a competitive edge in automation and artificial intelligence.

As the Games progress, additional events—including robot soccer matches and table‑tennis duels—will further test the limits of humanoid design. Observers will be watching closely to see whether the current pace of improvement can be sustained and how quickly the technology might transition from competition arenas to everyday use.
